Sheffield is a city blighted by homelessness. I'm sure we've all encountered homeless people by the shops in Broomhill and Crookes or even on campus. While many of us buy them food and drink, give them spare change or volunteer and fundraise for homelessness charities, there is always the feeling that more could be done. I believe that the University and the Students' Union can lead the way by opening up the Octagon at night when it is available to allow homeless people to take advantage of the warmth and security, especially during the winter months. Not only could we give homeless people a place to stay for the night, but students could also volunteer their time to serve them hot drinks and snacks and give them somebody to talk to.
I realise there are logistical difficulties in achieving this, but these issues could be mitigated by opening up the Octagon only weekly, bi-weekly or monthly, or simply just in the winter months, and students could even fundraise to help cover the costs of keeping the facility open.
We are lucky to have what we have but homelessness is something that can so easily happen to all of us. I'm sure if we were in that situation, we'd hope somebody would lend a helping hand like this too. So lets lead the way and help out a homeless person today!
