Sheffield Intro is all about welcoming you to your new student life with a mix of events, activities, information, and support. It’s a chance to get to know the campus, meet other new students, and have some fun along the way.
These talks, as you might imagine, welcome you to the University and are a really good introduction to your life as a Sheffield student. Undergraduate talks take place on the Monday and the Postgraduate Taught Welcome Event is on Tuesday. Turn up, take the opportunity to find our more and speak to current students, and then take some time out to look around the Students’ Union building.
Wednesday of Intro Week is all about discovering the great places to eat and drink in the SU building. Throughout the day there will be half price deals across the Students’ Union’s outlets so you can sample some of the fantastic menus on offer! It’s a chance to try a new meal or two, halfway through your Intro Week!
Sheffield Students’ Union doesn’t just host one Intro fair but four! On Thursday of Intro Week you’ll find the Activities Fair across the Students’ Union building with loads of societies and activities to discover, and students you can share hobbies and interests with. Friday’s Sports Fair showcases all the ways you can get active and the variety of sports on offer. The biggest freebie event in the student calendar is on the Wednesday after Intro Week (2nd Oct) with giveaways, competitions and info from over 50 student-friendly companies. The fairs calendar rounds off on Thurs 3rd Oct with the Part Time Jobs and Volunteering Fair; for students interested in developing skills, helping the local community, and earning some extra money.
Throughout Intro (as well as termtime) the Students’ Union has loads going on after dark; films, club nights, activities, events, and even a street food market. Check out the ‘Freshers Week - Nights’ Out’ programme.
Give it a Go is a programme full of one-off activities for you to try while you are a student here in Sheffield. During Intro Week there are lots of activities ready for you to try, plenty of which are free. They are a great way of trying something new, meeting new people, and sometimes exploring somewhere new.
Don’t forget the main task of the week; registering as a University of Sheffield Student. The University have a comprehensive overview of what you need to know, where you need to be, and what you need to bring right here. Registering gives you access to the Uni libraries and computing facilities, activates your student loan payments, and is how you get your hands on your University Membership Card (UCard) too.
With so much activity packed into the Intro period it can at times feel overwhelming. Don’t feel pressured to do everything and meet everyone in your first week. There are plenty of activities and opportunities to make new friends throughout term time.
If you’re lost or just want a friendly face to talk to, look out for the Intro ambassadors in the orange t-shirts. They are all current students so are full of tips and support. You can also speak to any of the SU Officer team (the students who lead your SU) who will be around throughout Intro to welcome you.
