Maybe you want to keep up your gym routine from home, or perhaps you’re seeing university as your chance to get into fitness, fitness forms an important part of many students’ times at university in some shape or form. Sheffield is a great place for this, so you’ve really landed on your feet. Read on to find out more and decide what will work for you!

Goodwin Sports Centre
Hugely popular among freshers every year, Goodwin is the university fitness centre, located close to the Students’ Union. It offers a well-equipped gym, swimming pool and various exercise classes. They have an early bird Sport Sheffield membership offer, so get on it while you can.

Residence Life
If you’re living in university accommodation this year, you have access to the Residence Life programme, which offers a variety of free sports and activities to freshers, ranging from bouldering to Zumba and everything in between. It’s a great way to try something new (without depleting your bank account) and make new friends in the process. Taking part couldn’t be easier - all you need to do is book in advance and bring your Residence Life card along.

Join the club
Team sports at Sheffield are wildly popular and come in a variety of forms. If you’re aiming high and willing to give a lot of time, sign up for a society at the Sports Fair. If you don’t fancy the commitment but still want to take part and meet new people, try Social Sport.
If you want to bring out your competitive side, find a team that’s taking part in the Intramural League – this could be made up of people from your subject, another society, or just your group of friends that fancy their chances at winning the league. There’s something for everyone!

Do it your own way
Maybe none of this organised, strenuous sporting activity really floats your boat. And that’s fine, as you can still get outside and get those feel-good endorphins flowing in the fresh air. Try the Saturday morning Parkrun in Endcliffe Park, or even just go for a stroll in the Peak District with your flatmates. Find what works for you and enjoy it – it’ll make your time in Sheffield even better!
