Although this intro week will be my third here in Sheffield, it is still one of my favourite weeks of the academic year!
The whole week is packed full of information and activities that will help you settle in to your surroundings with the SU being the main hub of activity. The atmosphere around campus during this week is amazing, with so many new friendships being created with ease.
With the amount of activities happening everyday as well as the number of students around you, it is very easy to feel slightly overwhelmed but the SU always has a number of quiet rooms available and a whole host of friendly Student Ambassadors that are always on hand to help.
Once you have settled into your accommodation, make sure you take time to plan what fairs you are going to visit over the week. The Activities Fair is my highlight of the week, it’s where you will be able to discover some of the 350 societies that you can join while in Sheffield. Joining a society is so much more than taking up a hobby, it’s an opportunity to meet people who share your interests and it is also a fantastic opportunity to build some new skills that you will hopefully be able to carry into a job once you graduate.
The Sports Fair is also another fantastic opportunity to get involved with a sport you have always loved or perhaps one that you have always wanted to try! Many Societies and sports clubs hold Give it a Go sessions where you can try the sport or activity before you join as a member. While a large percentage are free to join, some require a small fee that helps cover exclusive discounts and equipment use.
Another fair worth checking out is the Part time Job and Volunteering Fair, here you can talk to potential employers about part time jobs to help boost your income while you are at university. Many of the employers at this fair understand that you are a student and are therefore very flexible with working hours around your studies.
On top of all the fairs that the SU hosts over the week you can also discover the tastes of the SU food outlets and party till the early hours with your new friends at one of the many club nights.
Intro week offers a fantastic opportunity to meet loads of new people and discover new talents and passions that you never knew about, the whole week is key to starting your time at university!
