Sheffield Students' Union is a 'child friendly' organisation. We have a policy that states:
'The Students' Union notes that student parents make a valuable contribution to our student community and diversity, that higher education should be accessible at any stage of life and that the inclusion of student parents is important to widening participation.
This Students' Union believes:
- Where possible and appropriate, services, activities and facilities should be child-friendly.
- No student should be discriminated against because they have children or are pregnant.
This Students' Union resolves:
- To lobby the University to be more accessible for student parents and work with the University to develop a student parent policy.
- To establish a Student Parent Charter to be reviewed annually by the Student Officer team.'
While the Students' Union is committed to ensuring services and facilities are child-friendly where appropriate, the University is an institute of adult learning and the buildings and grounds of its premises (including the Students' Union buildings) are not designed with children in mind.
Therefore, during the day children are welcome in the Students' Union building, providing they are accompanied by an adult and are under constant supervision. (Where children are required to be accompanied by an adult, one adult cannot be responsible for supervising more than two children.) Generally, anyone under the age of 18 is not permitted inside the building after midnight. Specific information about children in each of our individual outlets can be found below:
Coffee Revolution - Supervised children are welcome in Coffee Revolution until midnight. Under 18s are not permitted after midnight.
Interval and Interval Garden - Under 16s are welcome in Interval and Interval Garden until 8:30pm, providing they are accompanied by an adult and are under constant supervision. 16-18 year olds are also welcome until 8:30pm; after 8:30pm under 18s are not permitted.
Bar One - Bar One is unsuitable for under 18s at all times, with the exception of visit days and prearranged tours.
Fusion, Foundry and the Octagon - Under 16s are welcome in Fusion, Foundry and the Octagon until 8:30pm, providing they are accompanied by an adult and are under constant supervision. 16-18 year olds are also welcome until 8:30pm. In terms of gigs and club nights, under 14s are not permitted. Under 18's are permitted provided the gig or club night ends before midnight. In terms of theatrical performances and private bookings, under 14s must be accompanied by an adult and under constant supervision. Under 18s are welcome, but again they are not permitted to remain after midnight.
Film Unit - The age restriction for films in dependant on the certification of the film, however, under 18s are not permitted in screenings that finish after midnight. Under 14s must be accompanied by an adult and under constant supervision.
The Students' Union must also consider the risks of all its activities and has a legal responsibility for people visiting the premises, in particular for those who are more vulnerable such as children and young people. As stated above, The Gallery, the Activities and Sports Zone and our bookable spaces were not designed with children in mind, but children are welcome if they are accompanied by an adult.
These spaces may be booked for organised child-friendly activities, but a risk assessment must be completed first. Please contact us for more information on this.
The Students' Union also offers a range of events and activities that are suitable for children, for example the 'child friendly' Give It A Go sessions and the family coffee mornings in Coffee Revolution. Please contact our Women's Officer, email@example.com for more information on our child friendly policy and our child friendly events and services.
